About Spread the Love California

Spread the Love California is an inclusive campaign to come together to aid emotional distress from environmental, social, and psychological traumas through the words of love and encouragement from strangers worldwide.

The idea was sparked by a conversation that the founder of the I Talk To Strangers® (ITTS) Foundation, Robbie Stokes Jr., had with disaster recovery expert, Carl Williams, founder of the Tokyo Task Force. Together, they discussed the Letters of Hope campaign which Willams coordinated in Japan, delivering letters to the victims of the 2011 tsunami and earthquake in Japan. The initiative was coordinated by Williams and the recipients of the Letters of Hope in Japan, who asked Carl for support in returning the favor to their American fellows from the “sister coast”. Williams, knowing the experience of Stokes, reached out for help. Together they decided to combine their expertise in the humanitarian response to natural disasters, volunteer management, and community initiatives, to help fellow strangers in California.

From talk to action, the ITTS team quickly mobilized to develop the plan of action for the campaign that is an international give back and expansion of communication to the people of California.

Through Spread The Love California, the ITTS team, together with volunteer “stranger engagers”, will deliver the letters of support and encouragement written by strangers from communities and schools worldwide!

The ITTS team invites strangers of all ages, backgrounds, etc., to join the Spread the Love campaign and send the letters - to individuals, schools, organizations of worship, scout troops, fraternities and sororities. Throughout California, local volunteers will distribute the letters in support of the ITTS mission of global humanitarian through positive dialogue.

5 Meaningful Reasons You Should Get Involved with Spread the Love

1. You'll Be the Change in The Lives of Others

Thanks to the Spread the Love California campaign you can now make a true impact on the lives of others. By showing your support, you will help another human being go through a traumatic life experience, regain the hope for humanity and build encouragement to rebuild what was lost. This is what Mississippi teenager Sabrina Bradford said after receiving the letter of hope from a boy in Guam:

"It meant more than almost anything else we received 'cause it was a special kind of comfort. The letters let us know that we weren't forgotten."

Whether it’s making a donation, sending the letter of love or volunteering your contribution to the campaign will support strangers through reassuring that they are not alone and helping them feel remembered and supported so that they can recover and move forward with hope and positive outlook for the future.

2. You'll Make a Statement

With the latest events happening in the world, it is now more important than ever before to stand for the positive values together as a community.

Spread the Love California is organized to promote the critical values for individuals and the community’s well being for current and future generations. We come together in the name of peace, spreading love and empathy for a stranger. And we all come to show that we care about those affected by  environmental, social, and psychological traumas in uniting the American and international community - one person, one conversation, one stranger at a time.

3. You'll Support Mental Well-Being

Various studies on the effects of environmental, social, and psychological traumas show that adults and children affected by trauma, have higher risk of depression, anxiety and PTSD. According to the research by the Professor of Psychology and Pediatrics at the University of Miami, Annette M. La Greca, those who recover faster report having more social support and fewer life stressors that enable more positive coping.

Spread the Love California is the response to the emotional needs of the individuals in the aftermath of traumatic events. The act of support in the form of a mindful listener as an ITTS “stranger engager” volunteer, bringing the letters of hope and encouragement delivered to the evacuees, will go a long way.

4. You'll Help Fellow Americans

Launched in 2012 in response to a tragic event, the ITTS Foundation has been supporting local communities by spreading the values of peace, dialogue and empathy. Through events the Peace Jam summer concert in Brevard County, Florida as well as training sessions including, but not limited to, NASA, School Boards and High Schools across the nation, the ITTS Foundation has been bringing communities together and promoting positive values to people affected by the traumatic experiences.

With your support, there is so much more that we can do. By making your contribution to the Spread the Love in California, you will show your support to our initiatives and encourage others to do the same.

Write a letter to those affected by personal struggle, spread the word about the campaign to involve people in your community, make a donation, or simply say “Hi!” to our volunteers. Whatever your choose, you can be sure of one thing, your contribution helps us to do more!

5. Your Contribution Will Go A Long Way

ITTS is a small, agile team of highly-skilled, committed, and experienced volunteers who love what they do. The ITTS Executive team has six plus years of experience in community building, mobilizing local organizations, and developing young leaders.

Different than other large charities with large organizational expenses, the ITTS team keeps operational cost to a minimum to maximize the impact. That means that every financial and in-kind contribution you make, goes directly into development of the Spread the Love campaign to benefit those who need your encouragement!
